Report by Mr. R. W. Weightman as to the most suite Telephone Exchange System for adoption in Hongkong, Kowloon
and the New Territories.
I arrived at Victoria on the 12th inatent and have since, under the guidance of Mr. Bennett, inspected the Telephone Exchanges and the areas served by them at Victoria, Peak and Kowloon. With him I have also visited the outlying towns and villages on the Island and in the New Territories. (2). While the chief considerations in this matter are the climatic and the economic there are other aspects of it which
require comment. It will be convenient, therefore, to deal
with it under the following heads:-
(a) Present position.
(b)
Climatic conditions.
(c) Comparison of Common Battery Manual

Present Position.
(3). The system now in use at the three exchanges is of the
Magneto type with generator call and automatic clear,
i.e.:-
the subscriber calls the exchange by turning the handle of a
magneto generator, and on the completion of conversation the
replacing of the telephone receiver gives a clearing or "ring
off" signal at the Exchange.
